In our discussion of the movie, we also talk about the famous historic black cowboys that inspired the characters as well as previous black cowboys featured on film throughout the years.

One-Eyed Jacks

We're excited to talk about Marlon Brando's one and only directorial effort, the 1961 western One-Eyed Jacks, starring Brando, Karl Malden, Pina Pellicer, Katy Jurado, Ben Johnson, and Slim Pickens. A notorious production behind the scenes, we delve into its connections to Rod Serling, Sam Peckinpah, Stanley Kubrick, and how it may be the bridge between the Traditional Western and the Spaghetti Western.

The Tall T & An Eye for An Eye

Take in a Western double feature of The Tall T and An Eye for An Eye, as Film Frontier covers their visit to the 2019 Lone Pine Film Festival in Lone Pine, California! Clarence and Felicity discuss these two films, both of which feature the glorious rocky landscapes of the Alabama Hills.

First up is the classic B Western The Tall T (1957) from famed director/star pair Budd Boetticher and Randolph Scott. Join us as we take a glimpse at one shared Universe that Martin Scorsese believes in -- the Boetticher/Scott Universe. Take that, Marvel!

Next we cover a rarer treat, An Eye for An Eye (1966), featuring Robert Lansing and Patrick Wayne alongside a villainous turn from Slim Pickens.

Tom Mix, featuring an interview with accompanist and historian Ben Model

Join us as we go back to some of the earlier Westerns, two films by the great silent cowboy Tom Mix (not to mention Tony the Wonder Horse) - The Great K&A Train Robbery (1926) and Outlaws of Red River (1927). We were fortunate enough to see both at the 2019 TCM Classic Film Festival, featuring gorgeous prints by the Museum of Modern Art and exciting accompaniment by Ben Model. Ben was also gracious enough to join us for an interview to provide his silent film expertise as well as a look at his unique profession.
